Meals On Wheels Announces Ways to Give to Others this Holiday Season

(Sheboygan – October 2020) With the holidays around the corner and the need to stay safer at home – especially for seniors and those with underlying conditions - Fresh Meals On Wheels of Sheboygan County, Inc. (FMOW) is excited to announce a number of ways community members can still make an impact in Sheboygan County.

“Feeling appreciated, knowing others care and being part of something bigger is what we all crave, especially when times are hard,” said Kelly Anderson, Meals On Wheels of Sheboygan County CEO. “So we are honored to be able to share these options for paying it forward, giving back and making a positive impact. Being kind is always crucial, especially lately.”

Opportunities to get involved include:

Stuff the Trunk at International Subaru – as part of this year’s Share the Love campaign, International Subaru and FMOW have partnered to collect enrichment activities and items that will be delivered to FMOW meal recipients throughout the winter months. Items include activity books, puzzles, non-skid fuzzy socks and more. For a complete list and a link to an Amazon wish list, visit freshmealsonwheels.org.

Caring Callers – because of social distancing guidelines, meal recipients see volunteers less frequently than in the past and only at a distance. FMOW is in need of kind and compassionate people willing to make a few phone calls a week to say hello to a homebound neighbor and check in – it’s a rewarding experience for both the caller and meal recipient. All volunteer Caring Callers must pass a background check. Email volunteers@freshmealsonwheels.org or call 920-451-7011 to learn more or to sign up.

Santas/Elves Needed –Traditionally, FMOW meal recipients receive a special delivery of cookies, lovingly made by dozens of caring community members. Unfortunately, this year, FMOW cannot accept cookie donations and boxes of cookies will not be delivered. Instead, FMOW will coordinate a special St. Nick gift bag delivery to all meal recipients. We would love to see Santa and his elves take time to make those deliveries. To make that happen, we need Santa and elf costumes and people to fill them! Deliveries will be made the third week of December. Please email volunteers@freshmealsonwheels.org to help.

Goodies for St. Nick’s gift bags needed – Traditionally, FMOW meal recipients receive a special delivery of cookies, lovingly made by dozens of caring community members. Unfortunately, this year, FMOW cannot accept cookie donations and boxes of cookies will not be delivered. Instead, FMOW will coordinate a special St. Nick gift bag delivery to all meal recipients. We need about 300 small holiday gift bags and items like socks, lip balm, lotion and prepackaged candy or chocolates to put in the bags. Please email freshfood@freshmealsonwheels.org to donate items for the St. Nick’s gift bags.

Gas Cards – With all volunteers driving only the fully sanitized FMOW vehicles to ensure the safety of all deliveries, the need to fuel up is great. Kwik Trip gas cards would make a joyful stocking stuffer for Fresh Meals On Wheels.

Monetary Donations – Every $2 donated subsidizes the cost of one medically tailored meal. As a 501(c)3 organization, FMOW relies on the generosity of others to provide the funds needed to keep our meals freshly cooked and safely delivered on a regular schedule. Please consider making a donation to enable us to continue caring for those who are elderly, disabled and homebound with kindness and respect. All donations are fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

About Fresh Meals On Wheels

For 50 years, FMOW has provided tasty, nutritious, home-delivered meals to Sheboygan County’s senior, disabled, and homebound residents. Since 2012, meals have been made in FMOW’s Christopher Family Kitchen using fresh, local ingredients from the FMOW gardens, or donated by local farmers and gardeners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, FMOW has gone to no-contact, weekly meal delivery. Volunteer Caring Callers regularly check in with clients by phone, providing peace of mind for clients and their families.

Fresh Meals On Wheels of Sheboygan County has no waiting list or income restrictions. For more information, call 920-451-7011.
